Last month, I bought AYR’s Deep End shirt and loved it so much I got a another one. It’s ourbest white button-up shirtfor a reason: It’s made from an Italian-milled oxford cotton with a nice handfeel, and it’s cut in a roomy, menswearlike silhouette that’s both structured and casual. I also love the big patch pocket, slightly dropped shoulders, and size of the collar — not too big or too small. The shirt’s proportions are just so good. Another detail I appreciate is itsno-placket French frontthat keeps the shirt from looking too much like an actual oxford.
AYR recommends buying your true size, even though it’s “designed for a loose fit.” I’m five-foot-two and ordered a small. It’s a little long in the sleeves and definitely blousy, but I usually wear the sleeves rolled up anyway. (I like that it has thatAnnette Bening inThe American Presidentlook going for it, though it’s not actually that huge.) The bottom hem and shirttail aren’t too long either. But for my second one, which I got in blue, I decided to size down to extra small, and that was the right choice.

After my first couple of wears for both shirts, I washed them on cold and put one in the dryer on low and hang-dried the other. (Instructions say to wash cold and tumble dry low; cool iron if needed.) I don’t actually remember which one went into the dryer, but side by side they look more or less identical with a nice washed texture I didn’t really mind. I would maybe do a pass with an iron or steamer if I were dressing them up, but for a weekday outfit, they look fine. My problem with poplin shirts is that they get so wrinkly in the wash; these do not.

The shirt looks equally as nice with Levi’s as it does with a skirt. On a couples’ date last weekend, I wore the blue one with a peridot-colored slip skirt and flats and got one verbal compliment and several once-overs. It’s just so easy to wear. And comfortable.
