False lashes have always seemed like the AP class of makeup and something I’d reserve for weddings (mainly my own) or photo shoots. But asI’m getting older, and my natural lashes look sparser, I find myself applying them for any event. For me, it’s not about being glam. I favor a more natural lash look.Fauxlashes make my eyes pop more in photos. Plus, my eyes naturally turn downward at the outer corners, so a little extra lash visually lifts them.

I’ve triedlash extensions, but the upkeep and high cost were not my thing. I’d wake up in the morning with a few lashes on my pillow and I’d want to cry — only crying would likely loosen the glue and cause more fallout. I’ve also triedlash serums. They work, but I’m bad with compliance. So I’ve become somewhat of a connoisseur in false lashes.

I’ve tried them all: glue-on strips and individual lashes, bond-and-seal lashes, magnetic lashes, and no-glue under-lash clusters. After lots of testing and trial and error, the latter has become my go-to. I find them easy to apply and natural looking.

My favorite kit isImPress Falsies Pre-Glued Lash Clustersin either Classic natural or Wispy lashes. Each cluster has adhesive on it. No glue necessary. Pick a length and line up a cluster on your underlash (you can use the tweezerlike tool or your fingers) and press into place. That’s it. I’ve done just a few in the outer corner for a little extra oomph or a more dramatic full eye.

Recently, I attended an ImPress mater class led bymakeup artist Vincent Oquendo, who walked us through an application, and I learned some surprising new application tips:

1. Put a shorter lash in the outer corner.

I always thought the longest lashes should go in the outer corner, but Oquendo says if you have downward-turned eyes like mine, a heavy lash can drag the eye down. So, he suggested using one of the shorter lengths — eight or ten mm. — there instead.

2. Map out lashes.

The different lengths aren’t just about your comfort level; they help create a specific look when arranged in a specific pattern. For example, when creating a wispy lash, Oquendo suggests alternating between the ten- and 12-mm. lash clusters. Mind blown.

3. Keep the protective plastic covers on the lash tool.

I usually take those off, but Oquendo likes them for two reasons. They protect the eye from getting poked by the pointed tip, and they allow you to get a better grip on the clusters. I used the tool during the master class, and I agree that I had better control with the plastic left on.
