These Organizers Turned My Bedding Heap Into a Sheet Library

My closets are pretty organized, but until recently, bedding was the exception. I could not think of any way to store my sheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases other than stacking them all one on top of another in a pile. It was a cycle: I’d fold everything neatly, but the stack would grow lopsided as soon as I had to yank out a sheet or duvet cover from the bottom. The bedding heap would expand, sprawling out across valuable shelf space, until I’d take it all down, fold it again, restack, and repeat, like Sisyphus if he had angered the god of laundry.
So I was intrigued by a product that appeared in Strategist writer Ambar Pardilla’s article on theitems professional organizers tell everyone to buy: a set of sheet organizers recommended by Sarit Weiss, founder ofNeat & Orderly. The construction is quite simple: The organizers are made of flexible plastic panels encased in fabric, similar to a three-ring binder. You unfold it flat, place a pile of sheets in the center, then zip and Velcro the panels to form a box, which features a little see-through plastic porthole and a label sleeve to remind you what’s inside. As soon as they went on sale, I bought a four-pack for $30.
Sorting andlabelingeach set turned my bedding heap into a sheet library. I found that the organizers have a good ratio of structure to flexibility — an understuffed one can still stand up on its own, and the Velcro gives an extra-bulky set oflinensheets some extra compression. I quickly learned another benefit of the organizers: They can stack. (I recommend flipping the second tier on their side for stability.) In my shallow yet tall closet, it cut the space I had to allot to bedding in half — I could organize up, not out. The sheets we use most often stay on the bottom, with less frequently used sets stacked to the ceiling.
We have friends stay with us fairly often, and the sheet-library system has proved surprisingly helpful for overnight guests. It eliminates the need to rummage through a pile for matching sheets and pillowcases while you’re already taking care of a million other things pre-hosting — just grab a file and go. (It also helps that the organizer protects guest sheets from getting dusty as they sit in the closet.) And when the guest is headed back home and the sheets are washed and dried, we pack them back up and check the box back into the sheets library, ready to go for next time.
