What Ty Burrell Brings in His Carry-on

Summer getaway season is here, which means that you are going to need to bring some things with you. In a bag. To help us decide what to pack (and what to pack it in), we’ve enlisted some celebrities to tell us what they’re lugging. First up, an outdoorsy edition with Modern Family’s Ty Burrell, whose restaurant The Eating Establishment is now open in Park City, Utah. Welcome to My Carry-on.

We spend our summers in Utah, where my wife is from. And all of her family is up there, and when we opened the bars in Utah, “coincidentally” all of my family moved to Utah. Free food, free booze. When you live in Salt Lake City it’s virtually impossible not to get excited about camping because the Rockies are right up the hill. I got this backpack for a hiking trip I took last summer, and it was super lightweight. And because it’s REI, it’s also super affordable.

I just recently got this, and I found it to be extremely durable. And I’m somebody who’s sort of a klutz no matter where I am, and that includes the outdoors. So whatever I’m wearing on my head is going to get stuck in a tree limb. So I’d prefer for something to be well-made, that can survive my bad decisions.

I’m a loyalist to these boots. I grew up in Oregon, and Nike is our greatest export. I look like I’m endorsed by Nike when I’m walking around because I love the product so much. And these boots are amazing — we often camp in the desert in Southern Utah and these are really lightweight — so your feet can still breathe, even in 105-degree Utah summers.

This is a fold-out, plastic guide to tying knots. It’s for fly fishing. You can keep it in your shirt when you’re out in the water. Knots are incredibly intricate and I’m not particularly good at tying them. And this guide makes it super easy to tie while you’re standing in the river, as long as you don’t drop the guide itself into the water.

This is a Portland company, and it’s run by a Utahn. And their stuff is incredible. It’s kind of at once old-fashioned and innovative at the same time. They’re always trying new flavor combinations.

The Loukanika Salami is currently unavailable, but the Finocchiona Salami and Sopressata are still available.

This is an unbelievable cheese. It’s called Barely Buzzed and is starting to really make the rounds. It has espresso grounds in the crust and it’s perfect for the peasant-board camping lunch. It’ll help you get back on your feet and back in the water, which is why it’s something I’ll bring on my trips.
