The Best Hand Warmers and Heat Packs on Amazon, According to Hyperenthusiastic Reviewers

Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed (that’s four-to-five-star reviews and lots of’ ’em) products and single out the most convincing. While we’ve written extensively about the products that make winter that much warmer — like electric blankets, space heaters, towel warmers, gloves for men and women, and even some great boot liners — here we’re rounding up the best hand warmers and heat packs on Amazon. (Note that reviews have been edited for length and clarity.)

Best one-time-use hand warmers

HotHands Hand Warmer Value Pack, 10-Count
$8 at Amazon

4.5 stars, 1,130 reviews

“I LOVE THESE!!!! They work perfectly. I shake them when I open them in my hand to react to the air; then I put them in my pockets, and they get super hot. They help me stay warm on cold days and mostly warm on super-cold days! I love carrying an extra pack with me so when I see other people that are cold I can share with them …. They also help keep your tushy warm when you sit on them, you can put them under your legs or toes or on your neck when your neck hurts; I also rub them on my face and tummy and back. You can throw them away easily after a few hours when the heat wears off; package says eco-friendly!! You can tuck in bed with them to stay warm during sleep but be careful, in the blankets they get very extra hot!”

Best reusable hand warmer

Zippo Hand Warmer 2012
$14 at Amazon

4.2 stars, 2,186 reviews

“Love these babies. I bought these for wifey and me to take snowboarding and they work as advertised. I use a jet lighter to initially light them and have had no issue whatsoever — they are consistently warm and last some 14 to 16 hours on a full fueling. If you’re looking at these and are unsure if they are safe, here’s the deal: These are catalytic heaters (NO FLAME). You simply light them to get the catalyst warm and then cover them and put them in the satchel. That’s it. You can put them in your pocket, sleep on them, put them on top of flammable fabrics — they are safe and work really well. The Zippo fuel that powers them is available pretty much anywhere from Amazon to Walmart to nearly any gas station and they are good for some 60 to 100 uses before you need to replace the catalyst (it’s not expensive). Stop throwing away those hot-hands things and use this instead.”

Best rechargeable hand warmer

EnergyFlux Ellipse Rechargeable Hand Warmer
$35 at Amazon

4.3 stars, 1,215 reviews

“I take photos of the stars at night. In the winter, it’s cold sitting for hours taking the images. This hand warmer kept me toasty all winter. This is about the size of a deck of playing cards. Plug it into a USB port, and it charges. Once charged, it is available as either a spare battery to recharge devices, or throwing a switch and it becomes a hand warmer. There are two levels of heat; I find using the high setting gets it hot quick and then I can switch to the low setting and keep my hand warm for hours. It makes no noise, and, yes, it is a brushed metal case — no cheap plastic here! How long does it last on a charge? I don’t know; I’ve gone all night with it but then I recharge the next day. I’ve never had it run out of charge on me, and that’s what matters. There’s great peace of mind knowing if I forgot to charge my smartphone, this has me covered. But even better is knowing that when the temperature drops well below freezing, this warmer is keeping me comfortable!”

Best reusable gel hand warmers

Hand Warmers—HotSnapZ Reusable Round & Pocket Warmers
$22 at Amazon

4.2 stars, 320 reviews

“I use these all the time. The small red warmers are perfect for cold days when I stand out in the parking lot for duty at school. They are easy to carry around, heat up after snapping the silver metal button (Amazing!) in seconds, stay warm for 45 minutes or up to an hour!! AND they are reusable. When I come home from work after a week, I stick them all in a pot of boiling water, and they are ready to reuse within 15 minutes. This has made my winters bearable and something to look forward to. Would recommend for any cold-natured people.”

Best USB-powered hand warmer

SMOKO Wearable Fingerless USB Powered Toast Hand Warmers
$50 at Amazon

4.1 stars, 234 reviews

“I sit next to a window at work that, while pretty solid, still lets a little cold radiate in. And I type for a living. These warm quick (and the low setting is really nice for extended use) and keep a nice temperature. Using with an iMac currently and I have them plugged into the USB ports on either side of the keyboard, so plenty of cable length for stretching and reaching for stuff. I love these so much, I was going to leave them at the office but now I think they’ll travel between work and home for my gaming sessions!”

Best microwaveable heat pack

My Heating Pad—Hot Therapy Pack
$19 at Amazon

4.3 stars, 414 reviews

“I love, love, love this product. I heat in the microwave for one-and-a-half minutes, and it stays really hot for at least 10 to 15 minutes; then it slowly starts to get cooler. I love the fact that it’s heavy so its weight plus the heat feels great on my aching joints especially after a workout. One side is cotton and the other side is fleece. I noticed the cotton side doesn’t get really hot so I use fleece side most of the time … The rice does make noise when it’s being warmed in the microwave, but so far I am loving it. Have had it for a week, it’s very useful especially during winter.”

Best electric heat pack

Sunbeam King-Size Heating Pad with UltraHeat Technology and Moist/Dry Heat, Blue
$20 at Amazon

4.1 stars, 3,808 reviews

“I use this on these subzero Wisconsin winter nights of late in lieu of an electric blanket since this gets warmer, and I may place it where I like. I even use it to warm my feet before putting on my winter boots because if my feet go into the boots cold they seem to stay cold. So this heating pad works great. It’s also nice that it doesn’t shut off automatically after a couple of hours.”

Best hot water bottle

Attmu Classic Rubber Transparent Hot Water Bottle 2-Liter with Knit Cover—Red
$11 at Amazon

4.3 stars, 728 reviews

“I introduced my American girlfriend to the awesomeness that is a hot water bottle on cold winter nights. She looooves it, always asking to heat up the ‘hot water thing.’ This product is actually a lot better than the hot water bottles I’m used to. Some will sometimes spurt hot water out when you’re trying to fill them up, often burning your hand. But this one somehow doesn’t do that; don’t know if it’s the material, but haven’t come close to burning myself. I might have to buy another one ‘cause my girlfriend keeps hogging it!!”
