When designer Elijah Roth, the founder of Certain Rain studio, received his first order for aNetto Lampin April 2024, he got to work in his bedroom, laying out eight laser-cut aluminum panels on his desk and then fitting them around a 3-D-printed light diffuser, sort of like an advanced lego project. Roth then polished the lamp with an orbital sander. Since moving into a studio space, he still makes each lamp by hand, and the Netto has developed a niche fan base. Strategist writerErin Schwartzspotted one atBenthos(99 Canal St.),a vintage-clothing shop in Chinatown, and was so taken with its rounded edges and stark angles that they asked the owner where it was from. Then they noticed the lamp again atKomune(92 Orchard St.),a boutique that sells avant-garde tailoring from emerging designers. Roth, who also designed the inviting lighting atElbow Bread bakery(1 Ludlow St.),says the Netto is about subtraction and addition, referring to the oval shape of the cutouts and the light diffuser that sits inside the panels. “It’s kind of a different lamp depending on which angle you’re looking at it,” he says.
