What Do You Buy a Strategist Staffer? Here’s What 17 of Us Want.

I ticked something off my bucket list and visited artist andfilm-maker Derek Jarman’s gardenthis winter. It’s an extraordinary project – a shingle garden built in the shadow of a nuclear power plant, during the last years of his life – and I was moved by how beautiful it was in person. Jarman kept a diary throughout the process, which this book combines with photos of the garden through the seasons.

We do a secret santa with my husband’s family, and the budget is $50. I’ve asked for these pyjamas (time has taught me to be incredibly specific).

I first saw these when my friend Annie was wearing them a few weeks ago, and immediately knew that I wanted a pair. The green pearl with the silver reminds me a bit of Ted Muehling’s one-off pieces, but for a much lower price, and the pin cushion design almost feels medieval. They were just very beautiful in person, and very high on my holiday wish list.

This year,Iam the person asking for abathrobe— specifically, one of the striped ones from Brooklinen that my colleague Ambar says is comfortable, soft, and absorbent. I can already picture myself wearing it while blow drying my hair in the new year.

I’ve been on a hunt for a new moisturizer that can handle my tretinoin and this cold weather. So far, I’ve been limiting myself to drugstore picks (namely,CeraveandVanicream), but I’ve been curious aboutSofie Pavitt’s painfully expensive “moisturizer to end all moisturizers”ever since my editor Hilary wrote about it earlier this fall. A girl can dream.

My search for a new personal scent continues, something I discussed in my latest “Strategist Brain.” While several sultry, sweet and musky contenders have lately caught my eye — including picks fromByredoandAndrea Mack— Monbeau’s has continued to haunt me. I first encountered it in the air that lingered behind somebody – whom I proceeded to chase down – at a brunch in May, begging for scent details (and a spritz). Maybe someone will finally pull the trigger for me.

I’ve never been able to justify spending money on any one of themanyOrseund Iris pieces that I’ve, from afar, coveted, yet watched come and go over the years. This jacket, one of their latest designs, may be the closest thing to Chanel I can (hopefully) get.

After tossing a salad in an extremely large metal mixing bowl at Thanksgiving, I realized that I desperately needed a wooden salad bowl. I wrote astoryon the best ones last year and have wanted one from Andrew Pearce ever since. The handmade-in-Vermont bowls are expensive but the maker sells seconds at a discount that have slight flaws and imperfections but are still beautiful and functional. I’ve been eyeing this large bowl in cherry. It’s $320 compared to the original price of $400, which is still a lot, but based on my sources’ enthusiastic recommendations, it will be more than worth the price.

For my birthday in September, my partner got me a Nintendo Switch and the rest of my family went in on games and extra controllers. But I’ve realized the one thing I still need is a protective case, so I can bring it with me on the go or to a friend’s place. I’d love to get a cute carrying case for my Switch, like this Cinnamoroll one.

I’ve got years worth of pictures stored in my Google Photos that never see the light of day. I’d love to display them all, but I have so many that I get overwhelmed at the prospect of getting them printed and framed — which to choose?!. I’ve been really interested in getting one of these digital picture frames so I can just upload all my favorites and not have to worry about getting anything printed. (I’m also considering getting one of these for my parents, so maybe I’ll just get one as a gift to myself too.)

I’m redoing my living room and I have a vision of adding one of these adorable sheep footrests to go next to me couch. It was on my Christmas wishlist last year and never made it under the tree, but maybe this is the year.

I also wouldn’t mind getting this suede trench in the most delicious olive color.

I got to ogle Lindquist’s gorgeous leather bags in person at their new Brooklyn storefront and they are to die for. Nobody has colors like these: rich, saturated, but still playful. I loved every silhouette I saw, though the Linda bag is the stuff work bag dreams are made of. Fellow writer Liza, who I was with, ID’d it as the bag carried by one of the No. 6 founders, so I would be in good company if this one was gifted to me this year.

If only to be able to say, “They’re opera-length!” every time I take off my coat. But in all seriousness, it’s been very cold and nothing sounds warmer thancashmeregloves.

I’ve been wanting something from Quarry for years but haven’t been able to justify spending the money on myself. So I’m just going to put these 14K gold wobbly hoops here as a dream gift.

I want to learn to knit and have heard that Wool and the Gang kits make it really fun and gratifying. I like this swingy cardigan.

When I moved at the beginning of October I got rid of all my old grubby potholders. Now I need some and would love it if someone gave me these burgundy beauties.

Everything she does is so great. I’ve been working on a menorah’s roundup (coming soon!) and all of hers are amazing, but what I really have my eye on right now is a necklace — or, several, since there are but a few Idon’tlove. TheEye-Con, theMensch, aMake-Your-Own necklace(maybe with ablack and white cookie charm, ormy initials), aCustom Pet Portrait necklaceof my dog… I’d be happy to unwrap any (or all) of them.

I currently live in Los Angeles, but I’m a born-and-raised New Yorker and very proud of it, so I’m always open to some good NYC gear. I’ve been eyeing this hat for a while now — I’m still a regular visitor to the Met, it’s much more fun than a basic Met’s hat, and my initials are M.E.T., so it feels like a good idea all around. If it’s not purchased for me, I’ll happily gift it to myself. Yes — I want to be one of the peopletying a scrap of cashmere around their neck. I bought this for a friend’s birthday present in September and was immediately jealous, but didn’t want to spend that much on myself in that moment. I scratched the itch by purchasing a much lower-quality knock-off from Old Navy in red, which is totally cute and I’ve actually been wearing it all the time, but it’s not especially warm. I’d love to add a cashmere one to my rotation. I like both the grey and mocha.

There’s a Tsumori Chisato purse that I let get away from me on Depop nearly a year ago. It was made of pale blue suede with embossed polka dots, and I think of it still with crushing regret. This Eyland bag is not that one, but it comes about as close as another bag can to fulfilling the void it left behind. I love the sturdy straps, the slightly slouchy silhouette, and the subtle polka dot detailing — it looks very fun to run my fingers over.

I make an exception to my no-buying-polyester rule when it comes to activewear, but I’m not, like, thrilled about it. So I very much appreciate that the clothes from sportswear brand H-O-R-S-E are all made from 100 percent cotton. Everything is soft and loose and effortless, fromoversized sweatshirtsto vintage-inspiredgym shorts; what I’m most taken with, though, are these navy track pants that I can see myself throwing on not just for workouts but also for running errands and lazing around on the weekends.

My belovedFiveFingersare so breathable that you can feel the wind between your toes, which is amazing in the summer and becomes a problem when the temperature falls below 50. I wore them outside on the first chilly night of the year and I could feel the cold pavement through the soles of my feet. A pair of warm wool socks would help, and these from sockmaker Tabio fit the bill. It’s more than just a sock gift — it extends the seasonal window on one of my favorite pairs of impractical shoes. I would also love thesebasketball ones.

Through no one’s fault but my own, I have been crunched in an uncomfortable chair for all of the Strategist’s busiest season, which has given me wicked tension headaches. I’m convinced this slug-shaped massage tool will cure me — that or a season pass to theTurkish and Russian Baths.

I bought an Artemide Abolla lamp from Buscano Vintage a few years ago and it is perhaps my favorite lamp I own. They currently have another one of my favorites in stock — the Lalea lamp designed by Bruno Gecchelin for Guzzini. (If you like freaky lamps, save an eBay search for “Guzzini” immediately.) I love how it looks like a boiled egg, an alien donut, or a nun. I’m maxed out on my lamp budget and I’m not sure what tariffs might run from Italy, so I haven’t bought it myself, but it would be an amazing gift.

Every year, I ask my family for silver earrings or necklaces, their choice. I trust them! But if I had to choose a specific piece, this spiral charm is quite cute.

I am in need of a new chef’s knife after my old knives have dulled and broken (with one actually coming apart at the tang and handle), and this eight-inch knife has been on my wishlist this year. I first read about it in my colleague Emma Wartzman’s guide to thebest chef’s knives, and its wooden handle looks so sleek. It would definitely make prep more enjoyable!

Do I need a $225 heather grey hoodie? No. But the fun thing about this annual wishlist is that it’s an opportunity to talk about covetable (and sometimes impractically priced) pieces of clothing that have been on my mind for a while. This grey hoodie is one of those items. I’ve been on the hunt for a simple, boxy grey hoodie made with heavy cotton, like this one from Brut.

I play soccer twice a week despite the quiet-but-persistent complaints of my knees and lower back. So I have been extremely interested in trying this red-light-therapy wrap to soothe the resulting middle-age aches and pains ever sinceJay Duplass raved about it in his What I Can’t Live Without interview(after it was recommended to him by Jessica Chastain, no less). The price has put me off a bit, especially with the optional add-on of a convenient portable battery pack, but I’d sure love for someone else to buy me one.
