I work from home most of the time, and while it helps for product testing, it has made me acutely aware of how bad my posture is when I’m looking at a laptop. As any ergonomist will tell you, sitting all day puts strain on a body, and I have a connective tissue disorder that adds some wrinkles — lax ligaments make myneck unstable, and poor circulation has me crossing my legs and tucking my feet as close to my body as they’ll get. By the end of the day, I would find myself stuck curled up like a shrimp or folded like a clam, brain-foggy and stressed. On a bad day, I’d end up back in bed.
One day, desperate for a sitting position that wouldn’t leave meachy, I tried working on the floor. Something clicked — unlike sitting in a chair, I could move around when I got uncomfortable. The only problem was back support; without something to lean on, I’d revert to a shrimp slouch. I researched legless floor chairs (if you’re curious, check outJapanese zaisusand thisfascinatingly weird ergonomic model) before realizing that I didn’t want achairper se — I wanted the option to recline. If only there were a piece of furniture that would let me change positions every ten minutes.

It turns out that exists and it’s a wedge-ramp combo from the Atlanta sex-furniture company Liberator. I learned about it from Strategist senior writer Dominique Pariso, who discovered in the course of herSex Week reportingthat it is the most-recommended sex-wedge brand among professionals. (The company makes a cameo in a2011 episode ofThe Real Housewives of Atlanta; longtime readers may recognize it from salacious ads in the back ofNew YorkMagazine as well.) I requested a tester on a whim, giving it a 50-50 chance of addressing my problem.
It has since become the only place I work, outside of reluctantly taking meetings from an office chair. It pains me to putsexandemailsin the same sentence, but the same things that sex experts like about this tool also avail it to laptop laborerswho can’t sit still. The foam is supportive, the sections are easy to move, and the cushions are angled to fit the human body better than any lumbar pillow I’ve tried. Per Liberator, the ramp will help you discover “adventurous positions you never thought possible,” which is true. I never thought I’d write an article while reclining like a Roman emperor, yet here I am.
As far as its intended purpose goes, I’m preserving my work-life boundary and using this sex pillow solely as nonsexual furniture. If you want to go both ways, the pillow has a machine washable microfiber cover and a waterproof barrier under that. No judgment here — or you can be a true freak and just use it for emails.
