Theoretically, running is an inexpensive activity. All you need is a pair of shoes and you’re on your way. But these days, a good pair of running shoes often costs at least $150. And while youcanwear any old pair of shorts and shirt, it’s nice to have the good stuff — the shorts that don’t make you chafe, the shirt that doesn’t get sopped with sweat. And no, you don’t need a watch, but if you’re training for any sort of goal, being able to track your progress is incredibly helpful.
Add that all up and you can easily be wearing $500 worth of gear when you head out for a jog. Which is why Black Friday is prime time for runners. Right now, running gear of all types, fromshoesand apparel towatchesandenergy gels, is well discounted — some of it for the only time it has been (and will be) this year. If you’re in need of a restock (or, let’s be honest, even if you’re not — I know runners!), now’s the time to buy. Below, I’ve rounded up all the best deals on some of our favorite expert-recommended running gear. Many of the pieces are ones I use, as a runner of 15-ish years, and many are pieces my fellow runners at the Strategist use. Some of these pieces are already low in stock, and a lot of the saleswillend on Cyber Monday, so shop sooner than later.
Deals I personally think are the best
I generally consider myself to be a budget runner. I don’t love spending $100-plus on a shirt I’m just going to sweat in. But Tracksmith’s Brighton Base Layer is absolutely worth $100, in my opinion. It’s incredibly soft and comfortable, warm yet breathable, and it looks good to boot. I own two and will be thinking long and hard about adding a third to my collection while it (and almost everything else at Tracksmith) is 20 percent off. Another piece I wear all the time on these cold, dark days: Janji’s runninggloves. You can turn them into mittens that keep your hands very toasty on windy days, and they have a reflective strip. And while any pair of shoes is a good investment right now, “super shoes” for racing are the best deal. They’re really never on sale (and when they are, you don’t get to pick your color), so getting a pair for the price of a normal, non-carbon-plated pair of shoes is your best bet.
Women’s running apparel
Some of the trendiest running brands are having their only sales of the year right now, likeBanditandTracksmith, and while the discounts aren’thugeand stock is iffy, it’s still absolutely worth buying now if you want something. You won’t see these discounts again until next year, and their stuff isnotcheap. It is very good though. You’ll find many of these brands’ pieces on our best-of lists, and I own and love plenty of it myself. TheBrighton Base Layer, in particular, is my go-to this time of year.
But if you’d prefer to spend less than $100 on a single pair ofrunning shorts(and believe me, I’m right there with you), plenty of less expensive but still very good apparel from brands likeNike,Brooks,Janjiis also on sale for likely the lowest prices we will see in a long time. Discounts on running shoes aren’t hard to come by year-round. As long as you’re fine with the older model of a shoe, you can almost always find a pair for at least 20 percent off.
