We write about hundreds of products each week. Here, in our version of the Sunday circular, we’ve plucked some of our recent favorites: expert-recommended essentials, life-changing stuff you didn’t know you needed, newly launched gizmos, and very good deals we uncovered while trawling through the vast online-shopping universe — including a streakproof self-tanner, the perfect red pen, and some of our favorite swimsuits from the Strategist Swimsuit Project (so far).

Beauty writer Krista Bennett DeMaio loves self-tanner — as long as a professional’s involved. “I’m still scarred from sixth grade when I used Bain de Soleil on my pale legs and turned a streaky shade of orange,” she says. Thankfully, at-home self-tanner formulas have come a long way with easier-to-apply formulas that are more natural-looking. DeMaio tested a bunch of them and found tanning waters to be the most foolproof. They are completely clear but contain DHA, the ingredient that reacts to your skin and creates a tan. This one from the Tan Edit was one of DeMaio’s favorites. She misted it onto her face and neck before bed and woke up with a subtle, streak-free glow. “It smells incredible, thanks to aloe and cucumber; contains hydrating glycerin; and doesn’t have that telltale self-tanner smell,” she says. And because the formula is gradual, you don’t have to worry about overdoing it.

DeMaio recently found another new beauty favorite: a retinal cream that’s made her skin clearer and more even with about two months of use — and costs a fraction of what she’s spent on retinal products in the past. “I’ve been applying it nightly to my skin for the past two and a half months,” she says. “Over time, I’ve noticed that the enlarged pores on my T-zone are looking tighter,” DeMaio says, noting that it’s become a permanent part of her routine. Perhaps the most telling sign that it’s working: “I’ve even been skipping the Paris filter, my favorite on Instagram.”

This week, we launched the Strategist Swimsuit Project, a summerlong stretch of stories aimed at navigating the (often-dreadful) world of swimwear shopping. And to kick it off, senior writer Ambar Pardilla plunged into the world of tankinis, which are, she declares, back. “You don’t have to choose between the bravery of a bikini and the safety of a one-piece. And your navel is free!” she says. She pulled together over 20 tankini sets from Reformation, Staud, Hunza G, and Lands’ End. This high-neck one comes in six colorways and is made of a chlorine-resistant spandex that also gives you UPF 50 protection, and the back cutout is very cute.

For cute, size-inclusive, “basically indestructible,” and incredibly affordable swimsuits, just go to Aerie, says senior writer Dominique Pariso. She’s owned several Aerie swimsuits, some for more than five years, and they look as good as the day she bought them — no stretching, discoloration or pilling — and always earn her compliments. Her favorite suits are the ones made from the brand’s pique fabric. “It’s supersoft and more comfortable than compressive,” she says. Plus, the texture adds visual interest. Her last suit made from the material lasted several years, so this year, she’s replacing it with this ruched one-piece.

Ahead of warm weather, Pardilla pulled together this season’s best white skirts, jelly sandals, sunglasses, sunscreen, and more for her Summer 100 roundup — or, as she calls it, a “survival guide for the hottest time of the year.” One of the top-clicked items from it was this simple boatneck top from Uniqlo, which we’re dubbing the “office tank” of the summer. Its standout features are its built-in bra and quick-dry fabric, which is sure to prove great on sweaty commutes. And it’s half off right now, making it just $15.

Amazon’s Prime Day is less than three weeks away, and to help you get ready, deals editor Sam Daly, who’s been covering Prime Day for eight years, rounded up 173 things that will likely be on sale this year, including Laneige’s crowd-favorite overnight mask. Daly’s advice: Save the items you want to shop to your New York account now and shop straight from there come Prime Day. Father’s Day is just over two weeks away, and if your dad is of the outdoorsy variety, writer Katherine Gillespie found 49 gifts he’ll like, from an insulated bowl to a shoe dryer. Among them is this Strategist-favorite bird feeder that associate editor Jeremy Rellosa says is the best gift he’s ever given his dad. “It works like a Ring doorbell, giving you a livestream of the feeder and its visitors, but also auto-records any encounters, so your dad will never miss a visit from an avian friend.” His dad enjoys it so much he’s begun propping up his phone to watch the stream while working.

Pilot’s red fountain pen got writer Erin Schwartz back into their morning journaling habit. “Part of the magic is that fountain pens write fast, which reduces the lag between thinking and writing,” Schwartz says, but it’s the red color that really stands out. “Pilot has the best red ink in the biz. Some other red pens I tried had a blueish undertone or lacked that fire-truck vibrancy,” but Pilot’s all have the perfect “tomato-siren shade,” they say.

Schwartz, who was diagnosed with a hypermobility spectrum disorder, has been dealing with neck instability and, as a result, neck pain, especially after waking up. In their search for a solution, they learned about buckwheat pillows, which are firm pillows filled with buckwheat hulls. “If the ideal pillow is soft, downy, and cloudlike, buckwheat is the opposite end of the spectrum: dense, earthy, and firm,” Schwartz says. The pillow doesn’t squish, they say. “It doesn’t deform when you move, but it supports your neck like nothing else.” Within a few days using it, Schwartz was sleeping better than they had in years.

While in Paris last month, junior writer Bella Druckman noticed a lot of glasses-case charms on the bags of many chic Parisians. And when she got back to New York, she clocked a display of glasses-case charms at Madewell, along with releases by the “two horsemen of the Bag Charm Apocalypse, Vera Bradley and Maison de Sabré.” She bought this one at .Kate Lee in Paris, and it’s been clipped to her bag since. Now, she says, “I don’t have to dig around when trying to switch between my glasses and sunglasses, meaning no more stalling in a crowded subway station.”

The Strategist Beauty Brief’s fake lash-lift for cheap

This week, Arielle Avila shared results from a test of several clear mascaras. The mascara trend was called “ghost lashes” in years past, but it really is just clear mascara with hold so you can curl your lashes and keep them that way all day long. Especially useful for preventing bandit eyes on balmy days.

The Strategist Kids’ Department shared a wacky, profound picture book that makes a great gift

“One of the main job requirements of being an aunt is to read books at bedtime, and I’m nothing if not a dedicated employee. I typically reach for I Want to Be a Vase, a 2022 picture book by comedian and TV writer Julio Torres about a plunger that … wants to be a vase. Like the rest of Torres’s work, the story is wacky, meta, and extremely delightful, and the artwork — a mix of surrealist 3-D images and bright colors — is fun for kids and adults alike. The main message is simple yet profound: You can be whoever you want to be. I can’t think of a better gift to give.” —Hannah Kotzen, audience-growth manager
