I’ve spent most of my eight years covering technology trying to win back my off-hours time and attention from my smartphone. Despite how indispensable our phones have become (for much more than making calls), they’re also a massive source of distraction. I’m not proud of the number of nights I’ve spent on my couch on TikTok or doomscrolling.

It’s not just me, either. The impact our phones have had on our attention span is ofincreasing concern. On the bright side, there’s no shortage of potential solutions. You can install an app to limit how much time you can spend on certain websites or apps, or try using your phone’s screen-time settings, but if you’re anything like me, these often end up being detours from the infinite scroll rather than off-ramps.

The best thing to do is simply ditch your phone. So, welcome to Get Off Your Phone Week.

We’ve been writing about gear that can help you reclaim your attention for several years now, and this week we’ll be resharing some of those stories as well as publishing new ones covering even more ways to help you (and your family) spend less time on your phone. I tested out a bunch of minimalist phones in an attempt to replace my iPhone and found several genuinely viable replacements. A colleague spoke with parents about what cell phones they’re getting for their kids, and two others tried out a modern landline phone designed just for kids. Surprisingly, there’s a lot to know about setting up a landline phone in 2025, and we’ll have more on that, too.

It takes more than a week to curb a yearslong habit like doomscrolling — and there’s no single fix — but this week is meant to give you a starting point and some tools that we think will help.
