Swimsuitscan be ridiculously hard to shop for — especially since once the sticker on a bikini bottom’s gusset is gone, you can’t return it. And there’s much to think about when weeding out the bad bathing suits from the good, liketan lines,bikini lines, and what will actually stand up against saltwater. So to save you the hunt, I did the finding for you, polling beachgoers, pool loungers, and lake dockers for their tried-and-trues. You’ll see everything from a bikini that survived snorkeling in choppy waters to a unitard that can be tied tight while chasing kids around in the sand. It survived both chlorine and saltwater without a hitch. “I felt supercomfortable and confident in it the whole time,” she says. Sari Botton, who publishes the newslettersOldster MagazineandMemoir Land, tried on over a dozen swimsuits as a “kind of exposure therapy, helping me overcome my resistance to being so fully seen.” Her ensuing hunt for aone-piece for 60-somethingsturned up Old Navy’s side-tie swim dress. It may not have been what Botton had in mind initially — “swim dresses remind me of the matronly styles my mom and grandmother used to wear in the ’70s,” she says —but it’s good enough to make anyone the swim-dress type. “Everything about this silhouette perfectly frames and flatters my curves while providing a welcome amount of coverage for the area I’m most self-conscious about: my upper thighs, hips, and backside,” Botton says.

By virtue of swimming laps, doing water aerobics, and aqua jogging, our writer Brenley Goertzen has a lot of what she calls “sporty swimsuits.” “By my definition, a sporty swimsuit is almost always a one-piece with a compressive torso, supportive straps, nonrestrictive cuts, and just enough cheek coverage,” she says. “It needs to stay in place and not chafe or ride up because there’s nothing worse than picking a wedgie in the middle of a breaststroke.”This is a version of a Speedo she’s worn in both chlorinated and saltwater pools — and for workouts of all kinds. “Speedo swimsuits work for basically any water activity, especially rigorous swim workouts, and have never made me feel restricted in the water,” she adds. The square-necked, spaghetti-strapped top and high-waisted, cheeky-cut bottoms (which come with strategically placed seams instead of a panel) offer the coverage Sanchez is looking for. “I’ve never felt super-comfortable in swimsuits, so I always lean toward ones with high-waisted bottoms or one-pieces,” she says. And while she admittedly puts on the pieces only a few times a year, they’re still in great shape. They’ve seen Rockaway Beach, Cape Cod, Los Angeles, and the Hamptons.

Back when photographerAshley Serynwas a competitive swimmer, Jolyn made a splash in the Southern California swim bubble. The brand will always remind her of sunny days outside at practice — as all her teammates had different colors (like “sour grape,” “key lime,” and “dragonfruit”). Bre Harrison, a copywriter and digital creator, wore Loleia’s Shoulder Top and Scrunchie Bottoms (the same as Mazzanti’s) on a recent trip to Mexico. It was Harrison’s first time swimming in them. Our writerArielle Avilarotates between Left on Friday’s bikinis — including the Sandy top and Skinny Dip bottom. “They’re incredibly comfortable, flattering, and don’t budge,” she says. “To that last point, the bottoms don’t slide to the side or ride up, even when I’ve gone surfing in them.” If you needed any more convincing, she’s gone hiking with the bikinis on — in “areas where I had to stretch my legs at awkward angles to reach some rocks,” she adds, “it felt like I was wearing athleisure rather than a swimsuit.”

After a visit to the Wall Street Spa, and with microplastics on her mind, our writerKat Gillespiewent on a paranoid Google search that revealed that “sweating into a tight tube of synthetic fabric for hours at a time probably isn’t ideal for the human body.” And so Gillespie began her hunt for a nearly impossible swimsuit: one made without some form of nylon or polyester. Thebest and least-synthetic of the swimsuitsGillespie tried out is from a corn-chip company called Masa. “The cotton fabric has a unique crinkle texture that’s not unlike Hunza G’s, though it’s not quite stretchy enough to be one-size-fits-most,” she says. “The texture also helps distract from the fact that you’re visibly wearing a swimsuit made of cotton.” There’s only a small amount of elastane (less than 2 percent) around the arm- and legholes, but even these parts are “wrapped in cotton so your skin never touches the plastic.” Beyond the environmental impact, they “offset any worries about looking dowdy in your ecofriendly beach getup.”

Youswim’s bathing suits are made from acrinkle“miracle fabric,” as artistMaggie Mae Featherstonedescribes it. It’s “all-figures-friendly,” in either a size I (for sizes 2 to 12) or II (for sizes 14 to 24). Featherstone, Sanchez, and our deals editorSam Dalyall wear the Aplomb (which is available as a one-piece or two-piece). Sanchez has both the one-piece and two-piece versions. “They’re so flattering, and I feel comfortable in them because of how elastic they are,” she says. Featherstone pairs the Aplomb top with aVervebottom. “I’m very fair-skinned and need all the coverage I can get without looking like I’m stuck in the 1920s,” she says. They’re essential for her afternoons of seaside reading at Rockaway Beach and swimming in Northern California lakes. “Because the fabric is so sturdy, it can take a while for it to dry out, but that’s hardly a problem on a hot day,” she adds.

Since getting an Andie Amalfi in 2018, our senior writerLauren Rohas been singing its praises as one of the best bathing suits she’s ever owned. “I don’t have to be precious with this swimsuit and find it to be reliable,” Ro says. She wore it during her first and second pregnancies, in between having her sons, and well into being postpartum. “It’s comfortable with good coverage and support and is easy to maintain,” she says. The built-in bra, with removable cups, is suitable for hersmaller bustline, and the straps, which are adjustable, don’t fall off her shoulders.

“I grew up in Florida where we do not have bathing suits — we have bathing-suit drawers,” says editorMallory Rice. “So I am in the lifelong habit of buying at least a couple new swimsuits every year.” For the past few years, they’ve nearly all been Nu Swim — mainly for the colors. “The designer has such a wonderful sense of color, from chocolatey browns to electric blues to balletic pinks,” Rice explains. The Straight one-piece comes in paprika and silver, among other colors. Rice suggests sizing up if you’re on the taller side. Last summer, illustratorEdith Young’s outfit of choice was Ookioh’s Como Top and Athens Bottom — in an “heirloom-tomato-tinged take onBaywatchred” — with Levi’s501 shorts. Monica Khemsurov, co-founder ofSight Unseenand founder ofPetra, caught this swimsuit on a friend, and the strappy back made a big impression. Khemsurov was sold after seeing how it held up during their many trips together to Brighton Beach. Unlike other suits she wore up until that point — which stretched out and fell apart — this one has been reliably sturdy and supportive. She feels “locked down” in thebig-bust-friendlybikini, with the bottoms “not so tight that I felt like I was muffin-topping out over the sides.” In the four years since getting her first, Khemsurov bought three more. Though two were lost to hot-tub incidents (one at a Korean spa and another at a hotel in Mexico City), she blames the strong chemicals for fading their color.

Faye Harris Wood, co-founder ofEauso Vert, won’t do a thong bikini in public, but she’ll willingly put on this string bikini from Poetry by Locals. “It covers enough so I don’t feel uncomfortable,” she says. (The string sides are also good for tanning.) Made from a “towelling material,” a blend of polyamide and elastane, it not only soaks water but dries off quickly. “I also slather on sunscreen, and it hasn’t damaged the fabric at all,” she adds. In two years she’s had it for, it’s been to the Bahamas, Kenya, and France.

It was in Lisbon’s El Corte Inglésdepartment storethatDimepiece’sBrynn Wallnerfound out about Coração Bobo and its trademarked Tan-Through fabrication, which is “apparently scientifically engineered to allow for tanning through the suit.” But the promise of a suntanned belly was lost on Wallner, who actually likes tan lines. “What sold me is the silhouette (the low neckline and skimpy back are so sexy) and the fact that it dries extremely quickly,” she says, so “the problem of a soggy one-piece is solved.” It also does everything to accentuate her figure (she has a longer torso and is five-foot-eight, for reference). “Must be some Portuguese secret to hotness,” Wallner tells me.

“As far as swimsuits go, it is definitely on the skimpier side, but who cares? I abide by Nora Ephron’sfamous adviceabout putting on a bikini at age 26 and not taking it off until age 34,” Gillespie says.

Like Rice, once writerJo Rosenthalmade the switch to Nu Swim’s swimsuits, she never looked back. “The names of the colors make me want to collect them all like Pokémon,” she says. The combination she wears most is the Drip Top (available in lobster, pastry, and paprika) with the Cleo Bottom (also available in iris, cocoa, and olive). Together, they make a traditional string bikini, and the pieces can be easily adjusted depending on the coverage you want. “They really move with you, which makes me feel like a mermaid, whether I’m at the beach or just sitting in my backyard pretending it’s Capri,” she says.

“The Yes is like if thatArthur Elgort photoof Kate Moss grocery shopping in a bikini had a friend who studied color theory at RISD,” says Rice. She purchased it on a sailing trip last spring that was “an idyllic blur of sunshine that tanned but did not burn, with lots of little rum-and-Cokes and my first swing at tarpon fishing.” It’s unfussy, and there’s nothing she wouldn’t do because she was wearing it. There are a few different Nu Swim bottoms she wears the Yes with, but the best one is the Basic Low Bottom. (Unless tanning is the objective — then she’ll wear a skimpier navy-blue Staud bottom instead.)

The Disco Suit from Nu Swim is outfitted with drawstrings throughout, for coverage that accommodates wherever you are. “For instance, if I’m hanging out on the dock and want to optimize sun exposure, I might cinch the thighs higher,”Noihsaf Bazaar’sKate Lindellosays. She can lengthen a drawstring for full bum or more chest coverage, too. Her only complaint is that strings “can interfere with wearing the suit under bottoms, as they tend to bunch up. “This bathing suit acts like athleticwear — no slipping, holds me in, and makes me feel like a MILF,” says antiques dealerErica Weiner. Almost a year after having a baby and feeling a little insecure about her body, Weiner went for Beklina’s tieunitard. “I loved the way I looked in it, enough to put swimsuit pics out to the whole damn world,” she tells me. Because of the cut, she doesn’t have to bother thinking about the state of her bikini line. And the tie neck means it can be tied tighter when she needs coverage for chasing kids, or looser if she wants to show off. “It has a double layer of spandex, so it does a bit of a corseting suck-in of the belly and butt while boobs are on display (even when I don’t have a killer breastfeeding rack, the neckline looks good on my AA chest),” she tells me.

Litman likes thong bikinis over non-thong bikinis. As she says, they become accidentalthongsanyways. “For me, tie bottoms are the most flattering; the ones that aren’t adjustable tend to cut me off in weird places,” she adds. Bydee’s Barcelona Top and Malaga Bottom are cut just the way she wants. And the bikini “gets better the more you look at it,” with a beaded lobster on one cup and a seashell on the other. Not for a water slide, it’s a suit that’s better left for lounging at a beach club. But it went on a trip to Greece that went swimmingly. “I got sunscreen all over it, and that didn’t affect the suit at all,” Litman says. “It was as great in the ocean as it was in the pool.”
