My couch is old. My partner and I inherited it from his parents at the serendipitous moment that we were moving in together and they were downsizing. Still, it’s pretty comfortable, except for some unfortunate sagging. And that hasn’t been enough a problem to warrant shelling out for a replacement given that a new couch would be considerably lessfree.

The tradeoff is that to lounge comfortably for more than an hour, I’ve often needed to tuck a throw pillow behind my back. Which works well enough except most throw pillows are kind of bulky, so they monopolize some of the sitting space on the couch and make me sit more upright than I’d like.

Salvation recently arrived in the form of Buffy’s extra-longWiggle pillow. I write about sleep, so I was testing it for our guide to thebest body pillows. Where a typical body pillow is around the same width as abed pillowand about four and a half feet long, the Wiggle is more of abolsterthat’s considerably narrower and longer: a cylindrical eight inches in diameter and nearly seven feet long. After I tested it while sleeping and realized it’s a great pillow but its length makes it a bit unwieldy in a bed, an idea struck: Perhaps the Wiggle could become the lumbar support I yearned for on my couch.

The pillow is longer than the backrest of the couch, so I curved the ends to make it fit and plopped down. The narrow circumference fits perfectly to providejust enoughlower-back support without making me feel like I’m sitting upright at attention. I also like using it while lying on the couch, because I can curl one end of the pillow around to prop up my head.

It looks nicer than a lot of other body pillows, too. I chose the white fleece cover, but there arelots of options, including severallinen hemp fabricsin a range of neutrals and earth tones andflorals with velvet pipingthat I think are especially pretty. The cover does bring up the price quite a bit — they cost between $95 and $105 dollars in addition to pillow itself, which retails for $109 at full price.

But for me, the Wiggle solves the tricky equation of adding some lower backoomphwithout taking up too much space and making my couch comfortable enough to last until I’m ready to finally buy a new one.
