There’s a New Best White Sock in Town

As the steward of our guide tothe very best white socksfor women, I think a lot aboutsocks. For a long time,Comme Si’s Everyday sockswere my Best Overall pick. They originally came recommended by four separate sources who sang the praises of their wide ribbing, GOTS-certified organic cotton, and subtly statusy branding — an unmistakable beige tab stitched onto the back. They were without a doubt the socks of choice for the stylist–editor–fashion influencer set. And when I tried them myself, they certainly felt luxurious with a nicely cushioned heel, a reinforced toe, and a quarter length that worked with everything frombootstoballet flats.
But none of the intrepid testers at the Strategist is ever content to rest on their laurels, so I’m always trying and analyzing other options. And when I dusted off the white-socks story for an update recently, I realized a pair by Maggie’s Organics had slowly but surely earned the distinction of Best Overall by dethroning the Comme Si Everyday in my very own home.

I bought three pairs ofMaggie’s Organics Classic Crew Socksshortly after Strategist contributorRuby Redstone lauded them back in 2022. “The wide ribbing makes them look deceptively more fashionable than the average white sock,” she wrote, adding that they’re “very true to how socks would have been made before the popularization of synthetic fibers in the 1930s,” a detail I found especially appealing. And in the nearly four years since, they have held up marvelously and become the socks I wear first after doing a load of laundry (at some point, I found myself rummaging through my sock drawer in search of them and feeling legitimately disappointed when they were all in the hamper). They’re thick and durable, also made of GOTS-certified organic cotton, and hit exactly where a crew-length sock should, right beneath the start of my calf.
They even have a stamp of approval from my mom, who’s notoriously curmudgeonly about the low quality of clothing these days. After she saw me wearing them and commented on how thick and high quality they looked, I gifted her six pairs for her birthday. That was a couple of years ago; she’s still wearing those same six pairs, and now they’reherchoice of everyday sock, too.
And, well, the price factor can’t be ignored. Comme Si’s Everyday socks cost $30 a pair compared with between $10 and $13 for Maggie’s Organics’, depending on where and how many you buy. That’s about a 60 percent difference, and I suspect it subconsciously influenced me to start reserving the Comme Si for more elevated, dressier occasions. They do pair perfectly with aloaferormary janeplus a wool trouser or knee-length skirt. But on most days, I’m just running errands, grabbing groceries, or heading todance class, and for those purposes, Maggie’s gets the job done admirably while still looking more put together and fashion-y than an athletic sock.
Maggie’s are also a easier to maintain. I wash both brands on delicate, but I tend to be a little more fussy with the Comme Si socks, exclusively letting them air-dry, whereas the Maggie’s I toss in the dryer for an initial tumble (because they’re on the thicker side, they usually emerge slightly damp, so I give them some extra air-drying time before I put them away). Regardless, the Comme Si socks aren’t quite as fresh and perky as the day I got them, but the Maggie’s are basically unchanged after four years of regular wear. Redstone wrote that these socks are “knitted on old machines that create a heartier, more durable product that stays remarkably fresh looking and tight at the ankle” — a statement that definitely bears out in my experience. My three pairs are all in thenatural colorway, a classic off-white Redstone recommended, but there’s alsoa brighter-white optionandplenty of other nice colors, too, including navy, lavender, and turmeric gold.
So for now, there’s a new Best White Sock champ. Comme Si socks are my Best Luxe sock, but for a go-to daily driver, you can’t do better than Maggie’s Organics.
