Old Navy has a large selection of affordable fall jackets available, like this blazer, recommended by photographer and sustainable style expertMarielle Elizabeth. “I have been loving wearing an oversize blazer as a jacket with a sweater underneath, and this is the warmer version of that as the temperatures continue to drop,” she notes, adding that even though it’s a budget option, she has been “so impressed” by the quality. “It’s lined and the shoulder pads help balance my larger chest while still giving into my deep desire of looking like a ’90s power woman.”

As the founder of Berriez, a size-inclusive online vintage shop,Emma Zack’sfavorite coats are often vintage — but she’s found a new favorite in the Big Bud Press work jacket. “I love this jacket because it’s thick, 100 percent cotton, easy to throw on, and can be worn year-round,” she says. She’s also super-fond of the contrast of the gold snap buttons against the more rugged look of the cotton. Zack’s styling tip? Size up so you can wear your chunkiest of sweaters underneath it.

Two cool people we talked to name-checked New York City–based brand Veda, founded by Lyndsey Butler in 2008, well known for its leather pants andjackets. “I’m leaning more into sustainable brands these days,” says photographerLydia Hudgens, who appreciates that Veda is a woman-run company. She suggests Veda’s classic leather jackets, which go up to a size 6XL. Craig is also a fan of the company’s slightly cropped Baby Jane moto jacket and recommends pairing it with jeans and a T-shirt to “bring a basic ensemble to life.”

In her roundup of thevery best trench coats, Goertzen named this trench by Universal Standard her top choice for plus sizes and after testing it herself noted that it did not disappoint. “It’s easy to customize the fit with the half-belt and buttons plus a hook-and-bar closure at the collar. The oversize lapels and many contrasting buttons at the front also make this coat feel a bit more modern than other traditional options,” she wrote. “I love that the soft cotton-and-polyester fabric moves with me as I walk but isn’t noisy,” though she notes that the hem hits right around my knees, so if you’re looking for a longer option, the Derjon trench might not be right for you unless you are petite.

I’ve been testing out Alex Mill’s new denim version of its Chiltern Street Jacket this fall and I’ve been really impressed by the fit. It goes up to a size 18, but the fit is definitely oversize, with A-line sleeves and a swing-y silhouette that offers plenty of room around the hips and bum. I also love the red plaid lining that felt very appropriate on a recent weekend away upstate.

According to content creator and photographerBecca Murray, “I don’t think there is anyone out there doing plus-size outerwear like Cynthia Vincent at Baacal. Her tailoring is impeccable and she understands how to fit curves of all different proportions, meaning no matter where you carry weight, pieces fit as intended and look luxurious on every body.” Murray owns a few Baacal coats — and even designed her own in collaboration with the brand — but especially loves this “perfect, transitional” cropped trench. “It can be worn boxy or cinched with the tie, making it incredibly versatile, and the dupioni fabric lends a luxe feel to an otherwise casual silhouette.”

Universal Standard’s puffers are really great. Before climate change made New York winters mild enough for me to stick with a car coat, I used to wear its cropped Rainier puffer all the time. It was super-warm but lightweight and is streamlined enough that I never felt like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man when I wore it. It features a removable hood, a high collar, fleece-lined pockets, and water-resistant fabric. In addition to black, this season it’s available in camel, burgundy, and this super-striking plaid option.
