Moving into adorminvolves a lot of shopping forstorage— a foldablehamper, perhaps ashoe rackor under-bed boxes. And a lot of it is just plain ugly. So back in August 2013, during a spree at my local Bed Bath & Beyond, I paused to consider how best to organize all the jewelry I’d amassed over the course of my 18 years. I wanted a solution that felt adult — and where does a millennial teen who’s looking for somethingcoolgo in the 2010s? Urban Outfitters, of course.
There weren’t manyjewelry organizersto choose from, so I was delighted to find one from Mele and Co. that ticked all my boxes: namely, a simple, elegant design that could hold everything in one place, with lots of dividers. And I’m still using it today, over 12 years later. It’s moved with me from the dorms to several apartments (both during and post-college), most recently traveling halfway across the country as I moved from California to Texas. It has a velvety black exterior complete with a silver snap enclosure that once seemedverysophisticated and vintage to 18-year-old me. And now? Still feels timeless and fits in seamlessly with my interior-design style. There is virtually no wear on it, either, and though everything in my house collectscat hair, it requires almost no fur removal. I’ve used a lint roller on it a handful of times.

Inside, there are 24 equally sized sections that hold a good amount of jewelry: I like to store one or two necklaces, a handful of rings, or a few pairs of earrings in each. Exactly once in the entire time that I’ve owned this organizer have I removed the divider — it comes out all in one piece — and taken ahandheld vacuumto the insides; it, too, collects surprisingly little lint. There’s also a stretchy pocket on the inside of the lid, which I use to hold jewelry-cleaning cloths and the occasional bracelet or concert ticket. I can’t recall how much I spent on it back in 2013, but it’s (somehow) still available now, and the current price tag is a reasonable $35. That’s truly a steal for one of the best buys of my adult life.
