This Tempur-Pedic Mattress Is Unlike Any Other Memory-Foam Mattress I’ve Tried

I spent about a third of this year sleeping on two different Tempur-Pedicmattresses— the brand’s most and least expensive memory-foam options — to investigatehow different they really are. That “experiment” yielded its own interesting results, but perhaps the most notable was my introduction to one of the most comfortable mattresses I’ve ever slept on.
Before I started testing mattresses for work, I had a vague idea of whatmemory foamis supposed to do: conform around your body to suspend and support you while you sleep and prevent uncomfortable pressure on your shoulders, hips, and back. Despite trying manymemory-foam mattressesin my time as a sleep writer, I hadn’t found one that fully met that expectation, even if they were generally good mattresses.

The Tempur-LuxeBreeze is Tempur-Pedic’s most expensive mattresses, with an eye-popping price tag approaching $6,000. It’s explicitly advertised as acooling mattress, and it comes in three variations: a “soft” all-foam mattress, a “firm” all-foam mattress, and a “medium” hybrid mattress. I tested the soft all-foam variation, since I typically prefer a softer mattress. It has three layers: two different layers of Tempur Material memory foam over a sturdierpolyurethane-foambase. Both of the top layers also contain some proprietarycooling tech. The mattress is finished with a cooling cover that’s made from a blend of polyester, polyethylene, spandex, and nylon, according to the mattress’s tag.
The foam in this mattress is like nothing I’ve ever felt before
When I first lay on the Tempur-LuxeBreeze, I was surprised by how firm it felt, especially for a mattress labeled “soft.” I was also surprised that my body didn’t seem to make an initial “impression” — but after lying on it for a few minutes, I realized I’d been sinking so slowly that it felt more like melting. When I stood up, I saw deep impressions where my hips and butt had been, and smaller ones where my legs and back had been. It took a few seconds before the foam “recovered” to its original shape.
After spending about two months sleeping on it, I’m confident that it’s the best of what memory foam has to offer. The slow-moving, melty feel of the foam seemed to conformpreciselyto my body. And though I was technically sinking into the mattress, I never felt stuck or like my spine was out of alignment, which can be an issue with a too-soft mattress. I primarily sleep on my back and side, and I felt quite comfortable in both.
When sleeping on my back, my shoulders could sink in slightly for pressure relief, while the foam provided support for my lower back by filling the slight gap between me and the bed. I mostly felt comfortably suspended, like the mattress was lifting me up and cradling my entire body. The Tempur Material foam is extremely dense, which makes it much more supportive than the airier foam that’s typical of cheaper foam mattresses, while still feeling cushion-y.
Side-sleeping on the Tempur-LuxeBreeze was also very comfortable, though not quite as perfect for me as back-sleeping. I tend to appreciate softer mattresses, because firmer ones often put too much pressure on my shoulder when I lie on my side. The Tempur-LuxeBreeze wasmuchmore cushioning than other mattresses, though my shoulder still felt slightly jammed when I woke up.
Ultimately, I loved this mattress and genuinely looked forward to sleeping on it, as did my partner Sam — it remains his favorite mattress that we’ve tested to date. “I don’t usually notice too much difference,” he said, “but this one wasreallynice.” He also found the feel slightly unusual at first, but after he got used to the way the foam conformed around him, it completely won him over.
The cooling materials are surprisingly effective
I’m normally skeptical about cooling tech in mattresses; it often works, but notas wellas most people would hope for. The Tempur-LuxeBreeze surprised me here too. The cover does feel cool to the touch, even through amattress protectorandsheets. For the first hour or so of lying in bed, I usually felt fairly chilly, and then the mattress would come to a more neutral or warm temperature. Sam commented that on cooler spring nights, he sometimes felttoocold when he first got in bed. We also had some hot nights where the cooling was nice, but definitely not powerful enough to overcome peak North Carolina summer heat.
It’s actually worth the high price
It’s hard for me to say I’d ever spend so much on a mattress; because I’ve tested so many, I know that there are plenty of excellent, less expensive options out there. For example, our all-around favorite mattress, theSaatva Classic, costs $2,099 for a queen size (though it is aninnerspring, which is a completely different mattress style).
But with that said, I think the Tempur-LuxeBreeze is worth it if you have the funds — and Sam, who previously wouldneverhave considered spending so much on a mattress, told me he would consider paying full price for it since he loved it so much.
The quality is excellent, and the feel is unique and pretty impossible to dupe, so there’s legitimate value there. Tempur-Pedic does not compress and roll the Tempur-LuxeBreeze for shipping, so the price includes “complimentary” white-glove delivery: After you purchase the mattress, a shipping team will contact you to schedule a delivery time and date. Movers will bring the mattress into your bedroom, take any packaging away with them, and, if needed, they can haul away an old mattress too.
The Tempur-LuxeBreeze has a 90-night trial period and comes with a ten-year warranty. The cover is nicely made, with sturdy-feeling fabric and a good-quality zipper. The top of the cover even zips off so you can wash it. Overall, the mattress has pretty effective cooling tech. And even though I’ve now moved on to testing other mattresses, I’m still thinking about how great it was to sleep on the Tempur-LuxeBreeze.
