A Weighted Blanket that Doesn’t Look Like a Weighted Blanket

Earlier this year, I called in several new styles of weighted blankets to test as part of my research forthis story. There hasn’t been much innovation in this space sinceBearabyreleased the chunky knitted blanket, a better-looking alternative to the traditionally glass-bead-filled variant, though there have been plenty of copycats.
I found that if you want a weighted blanket that doesn’t look like a giant scarf or shiny coverlet, you need to actually get something that’s a hybrid between a weighted blanket and aregular throw. You won’t get the full weight range with this type, but I think that makes it more versatile. (I personally find weighted blankets too cumbersome for daily use.) A couple from the new batch I tested stood out:Cozy Earth’sfaux-fur Extra-Weight Cuddle Blanketand Coyuchi’s Dreamweight Organic Matelassé Throw.

Cozy Earth’s blanket is just a really big, heavy version of afaux-furthrow. It’s extremely soft and cuddly, like my favoritefaux-fur blanket fromPottery Barn. But because it weighs 12.5 pounds, it’s unwieldy (though very comfortable). It’s also 100 percent polyester, which isn’t exactly sustainable. Coyuchi’s Dreamweight, though, is a manageable 5.8 pounds and made entirely of cotton. It’s also one of the prettiest blankets I have seen in my many years covering bedding for the Strategist.
It’s made with organic cotton in a matelassé weave meant to evoke the style of hand-stitchedquilting. The channels are filled with dense cotton yarns that give the blanket its heft. Its fringed border — shorter on the sides than on the top and bottom — and natural, undyed finish contribute to the blanket’s rustic but refined look. It feels like an heirloom piece. It’s simply gorgeous.
I’ve used it on top of my comforter for added warmth and weight on frigid nights, but lately I use it as I would a throw blanket, tossing it over my lap while reading in myglider chairor watching TV on the sofa. It’s the perfect weight: not too heavy but still substantial and easy to move from room to room. The children ask me to cover them with it, too, as they like the feeling of being slightly pressed (5.8 pounds will feel like an actual weighted blanket on their smaller bodies). It also looks so good draped across the foot of the bed or folded into a neat packet (it goes particularly well with my dark linenduvetfrom Parachute).
While it’s admittedly expensive even for a weighted blanket, it’s a beautiful product. I plan to keep mine for a very long time. It would also make a wonderful gift, one I’ll be adding to various gift guides and my own holiday shopping list.
