What Jaedyn Shaw Can’t Live Without
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like mascara or a sleep mask. Ahead of the NWSL quarter-finals, we asked Gotham FC midfielder Jaedyn Shaw — who is an ambassador for e.l.f Cosmetics — about the flip-flops, seasoning sauce, and red-light headphones she can’t live without.
The hair gel that doesn’t budge

It’s actually so fire. It’s my go-to, especially when I have braids. It holds my hair down even with all the training, the sweating — like, playing games, in the sun, it literally does not move. I’ve probably gone through six of those little containers.
The sauce she puts on everything

It’s very similar to soy sauce; it’s just a slightly different taste. I put it on everything; it’s like the only thing in my cabinet that gets used frequently. I’m not a huge cooker, but it makes everything taste good. I put it over rice, I put it on my eggs — I don’t even really salt my eggs, I just put the Maggi on there — I put it in sauces. It makes everything better. They need to make little minis that I can put in my purse. My aunt always had the big bottle, and my cousins and I would throw down on the Maggi.
The necklace she never takes off

I never take it off except for during games and training. Jade is good luck in Asian culture. My mom gave it to me — she got one from her mom, so she wanted to make sure that I had one too. It’s jade and gold, and I’m also a gold girlie, so it fits with everything I wear. It’s something our family really likes and it’s comforting to have, the mixture of my family and my faith and the jade.
[Editor’s note: Jaedyn’s exact necklace is a one-off custom item, but we’ve included a similar one here.]
The smart ring that helps her train her hardest

She’s all scratched up, but I love her. I’ve been wearing the Oura for a couple years now. I like how it tracks my menstrual cycle, how it tells me what days I’m in, and how it helps me with on-the-field stuff like knowing how hard to push myself, or what to eat and how to fuel myself — whether that’s anti-inflammatories or more protein depending on what phase I’m in. And then it shows my readiness, my heart-rate variability, and how I rested and recovered during my sleep, which helps me know how much I can push myself the next day.
The flip-flops she wore all summer

I was really into the flip-flops this summer. Normally I’m like, toes are covered, socks on, I’m in sneakers, but I feel like this year was really a flip-flop summer, it was really trendy this year. And I had the worst mini sock-tan line, so I was trying to get rid of that. I also feel like the physios tell us it’s good to walk barefoot, but I don’t want to walk barefoot! So I’ll wear flat flip-flops, and maybe that helps. Apparently, walking barefoot helps your foot muscles.
I have three different pairs. One that’s very Brazil colors; I got those from a former teammate, Gabby Portillo. She brought them back from Brazil when she went to camp once. Then my other two pairs, I have a beige pair and a navy pair that I actually got in Brazil this summer, and they have a bunch of charms on them. When you buy them, you pick your charms and they punch a hole in the strap and press them in there — it’s like getting your ears pierced. And they’re so cheap over there.
The noise-canceling headphones she wears on planes

I have them in beige. I feel like the noise canceling is so perfect, especially on planes. With traveling so much — there’s babies crying, the airplane is loud, like, sometimes I turn them on and don’t even play anything and just chill. It sounds kind of psychotic to say that, but it’s kind of nice. And then on game day, I listen to a lot of GloRilla and BossMan Dlow, very ratchet.
The red-light mask that soothes her skin

I red-light all the time to make sure this skin don’t crack. Obviously I’m young, but I feel like I have to start early. Dark spots, I had pretty bad acne — that’s a time in my life that we’re just going to leave — but especially with how much we sweat, and how much we’re in the sun, the red light helps soothe my skin, and I want the anti-aging properties happening. I use the TheraFace mask every night, in the bed, after my shower when I’m on my doomscroll. Sometimes I read, but most of the time it’s a doomscroll. I like that I can actually see with the mask on — it’s not super uncomfortable to have my eyes open. I go through the preset cycles.
The primer that keeps her makeup in place, even during games

I feel like I’ve been using it for a couple years now, even before partnering with e.l.f. Obviously the name — it grips — but even during games, my makeup literally sticks to it. I’m giving it a hard task with playing, I sweat a lot, but my makeup still stays. It’s at a nice price point, too, for how well it works. I do my skin care, then put the primer over that, let it sit for a minute or so, then I put on foundation or whatever other makeup I’m gonna wear.
