If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — likemascaraor asleep mask. We asked rapper and actress Shayna McHayle, who goes by the stage nameJunglepussy, about the hydrating aloe-vera juice, bright-blue eyeliner, and knee-high Dr. Marten boots she can’t live without.
The colorful eyeliner she wears onstage

Even in high school I wasn’t super into makeup, but I didn’t play about my cat eye, largely in part because I was such a big fan of Amy Winehouse and she didn’t play about her cat eye either. I got into this when I was going on tour with Tame Impala in 2022. My older sister was helping me run errands and get ready, and I was like,I need some fun eyeliner. The cat eye needs a little up.She went to the store and came back with the blue and the red liquid eyeliner, and I’ve been using them ever since.
It actually stays on too long. It’s very hard to take off. It’s good for the performance, but at the end of the night, I have to do a deep cleaning with an oil-based cleanser.
The clean mascara that doesn’t cake up

I’m super-big on clean-beauty products. The NYX eyeliner is the only product that I use that is not technically clean beauty. My concealer, foundation, they’re all from clean-beauty brands. I really like Westman Atelier’s mascara because it’s volumizing and lengthening and still boosts the lash, but it doesn’t feel cakey. I like the consistency when you apply it. The way the brush is designed, it gives you a nice natural lift.
The pocket-size Etch A Sketch she doodles with

This is something I’ve had for over a decade now. I was Christmas shopping for my nephew and I got him one, and then I was like,Wait, I want one too.I’ve kept it on me since then. When I’m traveling or when I’m working and I have a little bit of downtime in between scenes, I’ll reach for it. I just used it the other day on a flight. It’s super-relaxing and grounding because there’s no white light, nothing blasting my eyeballs. It’s better than a notepad for me at this point. It activates a part of my brain that’s not activated when I sit down to doodle. With the Etch A Sketch, I feel this different part of me coming out and being expressed on this little red device that has been around for decades.
This past Christmas, I finally got myself the standard-size one, and it was so different from using the smaller one. The way I approach the knobs is different, because it’s on a wider scale. I use it more so at home for larger images that I really want to take my time with. The smaller one is super-easy to just get out an idea. I have an art page,@JunglePaints, where you can see all of the sketches I’ve done over the years.
The aloe-vera juice she drinks every morning

I’m actually drinking some right now. I really love my aloe juice. Is it juice? To me it’s water, because aloe is so hydrating and it doesn’t have any added sweeteners or anything. It’s hydrating just like how aloe is when you put it on a cut or a burn. I first started drinking it as a shot in the morning to activate my organs. I would literally take a shot glass and fill it up with aloe water. It felt so refreshing and medicinal almost. Now I’m so in love with it, I drink full cups. Sometimes I’ll have regular water and then I’ll put a shot of aloe water in it to give it a little boost. I do like to diversify my waters. I don’t like to just drink one type of water. I like to explore hydration across the board.
The perfume she’s been wearing for a decade

It’s so good. It’s unique. It’stheJunglepussy scent. When I started using that perfume, I was like,This is truly made for me. I’ve been using it for a while, probably going on ten years now. Every time I wear it, I feel superconfident. I get a lot of compliments. It’s just a smell that I don’t really smell that often. It’s also a perfume that’s technically made from clean, natural ingredients, which is something that I’m always looking for. If it’s going near my body, I want it to have as little chemicals as possible. So I was shopping around looking for a new scent, and I got a bunch of samples, and I was immediately drawn to Tiger by Her Side.
The custom leather goods she commissions from a fellow musician

Future Twang Leather Thangz is an amazing brand that does custom handmade leather pieces. I first started working with them because we both played a show for Prada in L.A. The designer is also a musician and they were wearing all these amazing leather pieces that I was drawn to, and I asked them to make something custom for me because, again, at the time I was getting ready to go on the Tame Impala tour. I wanted some Junglepussy arm braces so that when I’m holding the mic and when my hands are in the air onstage, the crowd can read that it says Junglepussy. They made other pieces as well — a corset, a neck harness. They bought a roll of leather for me in an oxblood color, and we used up all of that leather before we moved on to another color. Now we’re in our green-leather era. I just got green arm braces that say Junglepussy.
It makes me happy to know that I have these pieces that are high-quality and will live forever. When I’m long gone, the Junglepussy gauntlets will still be around. Hopefully they’ll be well preserved in a gallery, a museum. It’s important for me as an artist to collaborate with other artists who also get it. I’m constantly thinking of new things that I want to commission because I’m always enamored by the craftsmanship. I appreciate all the craftspeople out there. We’re in a time where a lot of things could be made just willy-nilly, so I really respect the people out there still making things by hand.
The knee-high leather boots that have become part of her identity

In high school I used to wear Doc Martens all the time, and I still have them. I did a free Halloween show with Doc Martens for my birthday in 2019 and they gifted me these boots, and they ended up becoming a large part of my identity. In the filmOne Battle After Another, the director replicated everything about me for my character, and the boots were a large part of my costuming — I’m wearing the boots all throughout the movie in every scene. They’re supercomfortable and I can wear them for a long period of time. Just like with the arm braces, I’m a leather girl. I love something that’s super good quality and can last forever, and that’s definitely what these boots are. They also make me feel sexy. There’s nothing sexier than a knee-high leather boot.
[Editor’s note: McHayle’s style of boot, the Virginia, has been discontinued, so we’ve linked to a similar style.]
Her favorite aviators

These sunglasses are so sexy. They’re so cool. I love an aviator frame. I really like the blue lenses because having the blue on top of my beautiful brown skin with my brown hair, it’s so pleasing to the eye for me. They’re my favorite shades that I’ve been wearing for the past few months. I can wear them when I’m dressed up, when I’m dressed down. Those are some sexy aviators right there.
A notebook that’s made for lefties

I found this in Florida when I was visiting my sister. There was a left-handed shop down there, and I was like,I need everything in here. I ended up getting the notebook for me and my nephew because he’s left-handed too. It really made me think about all the things in life that I had to adjust to because typically things are made for right-handed people. Growing up, I didn’t realize that I wasn’t getting access tothings that would make things easier for left-handed people. So when I went to the store, I felt really comforted by the fact that there are a bunch of tools out there that left-handed people can finally use and just feel seen and thought about.
I do feel the difference, writing in those notebooks with my left hand — it’s way more comfortable. I wish I had it growing up. I’m a collector of notebooks and journals. I have stacks and stacks over the years. I love collecting cool stationery. I use this when I’m writing music or poetry or just planning things out. I bust out that left-handed notebook and that’s when I mean business.
The customSimscreator where she likes to go “mod shopping”

I’m always in awe of the creations that Savage Sims makes and how much it helps me express myself in the game. It makes the game even more enjoyable. They have back tattoos, different-color eyebrows, eyelashes, hairstyles that I’ve had and also ones I’ve been wanting to try. They have different styles of clothes and footwear that look like things that I’ve worn before my life. The way Savage Sims creates, it feels like they’re building their own world outside of theSims, even though I know it’s a mod forSims. It’s cool that me as a subscriber, I can be inspired by that and see what I want to see reflected back at me.
Making these mods is so much work. They can’t just do it every day, every week. They were on a small break, but this week they wrote, “We’re cooking,” so that made me so excited. I’m looking forward to going mod shopping, is what I call it. Sometimes that’s all I want to do — I don’t even want to play the game, I just want to go mod shopping and download a bunch of things. It reminds me how limitless we are in creating. There’s so many things in this world people try to make you feel like you’re not worthy of access to, but in this digital world, the possibilities truly are endless and abundant. Anything could be created and implemented into the game for a fuller, more robust expression. I just think that is so beautiful.
