I love dressing like a grumpy middle-age academic, and a key part of the look for me right now is these L.L.Bean Boat Moc mules. I know it’s still summer, but I’m ready to pretend I feel a slight chill in the air, and my toes are ready to go back into pedicure-less hiding. These mules are ideal for this time of year, when you’re ready for fall clothing but it’s still too hot to actually put on layers or switch to boots.
I first spotted them in an L.L.Bean brick-and-mortar shop in the spring, and while I went home without the shoes, I kept thinking about them. I always have my hands full, so I’m a big fan of slip-on shoes, like theKiziks I’ve written about previously. I ended up ordering the Boat Moc mules less than a week after I first saw them, and I love them. They go with just about everything — I’ve worn them with jeans, loose linen pants, dresses, and even thebaggy knee-length shorts I love. I can already picture them going with a pair of pleated pants and an oversize blazer when it actually gets colder. The color, combined with the slip-on style, has the additional perk of adding visual length to my legs.

When I wore them initially, my feet cramped from trying to use my toes to clutch the shoes, and I thought they would have to be relegated to being worn around the house. But after wearing them just a few more times, they started to mold to my feet and stayed on better. I have average to somewhat narrow feet, so I feel my toes spreading out to fill the shoe when I wear them — but in a good way: They’re no longer trying to hold onto the sole. They feel secure enough that I even ride my bike in them.
I now wear the Boat Moc mules to go to neighborhood restaurants, on playground outings, or for evening strolls to get ice cream. While they’re made of full-grain leather and have a solid rubber outsole, they’re very light, and I can easily and comfortably walk a few miles in these. They’ll also be great for travel and airports and airplanes.
I like that the more I wear them, the more the shoes develop a handsome patina — they’ll be just the right amount of beat-up when I return to teaching this fall.
