Design nerdslove Alessi’s Pulcina kettle, a stovetop coffee-maker with a curvy, stepped silhouette made of stainless steel. (The shape, with its bulbous top and pointy little spout, was inspired by the head of a chicken;pulcinameans “baby bird” in Italian.) It normally costs around $100, but I just spotted it on Amazon for 32 percent off.
Coffee snobs look askance atmoka-pot-stylepercolators like the Pulcina, so I called up my friend Vivienne La, who’s had hers for a couple of years, to get her opinion. She loves it — “I use it over my AeroPress, which I feel like might be slander” — and reports that it’s not only a beautiful design object, it’s also an especially good moka pot. Compared tothe original, the Pulcina has sturdier components and produces a better, more consistent cup of coffee.
