When I call myself a self-proclaimed bonnet expert, I truly mean it. I take my nighttime skin-care routine seriously, and my hair needs the same time and attention before bed. I have fine coils that are extremely fragile and breakage-prone, so my idea of a night terror is waking up with uncovered hair and broken strands on mypillowcase. From pricy mulberry-silk turbans to polyester caps from the dollar store, I’ve tried dozens. After spending three decades in search of a bonnet that stays on all night as I toss and turn, it finally arrived by way of a Christmas gift I received from my sister a few years ago.

This is the main factor that helps mitigate slippage, a common problem for anyone who wears a bonnet nightly but one I used to face often (hairstylists have told me that my head is a bit smaller than average). It also prevents the bonnet from ever being headache-inducingly tight.
Another benefit, because it’s adjustable, is that I don’t need to keep multiple sized bonnets on hand to accommodate all my styles. This one protects a silk-pressed bob just as well as it protects longer, more voluminous knotless box braids (my go-to vacation style).
I used to be a silk-only snob, preferring a more breathable natural fiber. But silk is expensive, and I didn’t find one with enough longevity to justify the cost. None of them could withstand more than a few delicate hand washings without losing shape.
