Our best body pillow overall comes from the maker of our favoritebed pillow, Coop Sleep Goods. It is filled with the same blend of cross-cut memory foam and microfiber, which gives it a lofty, supportive feel that isn’t overly “solid.” Just like the bed pillow, the body pillow arrives medium-firm; if you prefer a softer pillow, you can remove some of the fill. If you prefer a firmer pillow and want to add more fill, note that while the brand’s bed pillow comes with an extra bag of fill, the body pillow does not. But Coopsells a few different types to choose from, including agel-infused cooling option. If you do need to adjust the pillow, all you do is unzip the machine-washable outer cover to access an inner cover that contains the fill. The process is slightly messy — if you’re removing fill, make sure to have a few large Ziploc bags on hand to contain it — but easy enough. Once you zip it back up, a good shake will help fluff and redistribute the fill.

This body pillow feels squishy and cushy when I wrap my arm and leg around it to lie on my side, but it’s also weighty and substantial. And because the fill is plush but dense, I can easily use it for support while sitting as well. Sometimes, I place it along the head of my bed so I can rest against it to read or scroll on my phone. Additionally, I appreciate the Coop’s standard sizing, as I was able to purchase a pillowcase from a different manufacturer to better match my bedroom — this$15 waffle-knit pillowcase from Target.

As far as materials go, Coop’s foam is bothCertiPUR-USandGREENGUARD Goldcertified; these certifications mean it emits minimal amounts of volatile organic compounds (airborne particles theEnvironmental Protection Agencysays can cause adverse health effects). And while the Coop body pillow isn’t cheap, at just under $100, materials-wise it is on par with similar body pillows and more affordable than most “luxury” options. (Also worth noting: The brand’s Original bed pillow has increased in price from $75 to $85 within the past year, but the body pillow is still only $99 — a comparatively good deal for how much larger it is.) The pillow’s combination of adjustability and comfort, as well as its reasonable cost, are what earned it the top spot on this list.

The design of the Snuggle-Pedic is overall similar to the Coop: It has shredded memory-foam fill — though without any microfiber mixed in, like the Coop has — and a bamboo cover intended to regulate your temperature. And all-in-all it’s pretty similar in feel and function; the shredded foam fill makes the pillow cushioning yet supportive. But there are some key distinctions. The cover of the Snuggle-Pedic isn’t removable, and the finishing details on the pillow I tested weren’t the best, with some loose threads sticking out at the seams. The fill distribution is also somewhat uneven, which results in sections of the pillow lacking in some fullness. Because it’s not adjustable, I ended up shaking the pillow from one end to try to get a more even distribution. Ultimately, I think not having any fiber mixed in with the foam leads to a slightly lumpier consistency. But I still found the Snuggle-Pedic to be an overall solid body pillow — just not quite as good as the Coop.

When I was testing this pillow, I didn’t mind the difference in fill consistency, since the shredded foam still easily molded around me and offered plenty of cushioning. It’s also supportive, if you want to lean against the pillow or use it as support for side sleeping. And because it isn’t stuffed to full capacity, it’s easy to bend into different shapes (you could also do this with the Coop by removing some fill). Strategist writer Brenley Goertzen also tested the Snuggle-Pedic and liked the moldability, saying it was easy to form into a U-shape around her back for reading in bed or to wrap around her shoulders while sleeping. The bamboo cover is quite soft and comfortable to snuggle into. But if you prefer to have a case on it, it will easily fit into most body pillow covers, much like the Coop. Overall, I’d still pick the Coop for its higher-quality construction and adjustability, but if you want to save a little bit of money, the Snuggle-Pedic is a good option.

Filled with a slab of the brand’s signature memory foam, Tempur-Pedic’s BodyPillow is one of the firmest options on this list. Goertzen, who tested this pillow, describes it as super-dense and “pretty dang heavy” — it weighs about ten pounds. Because Goertzen generally prefers a fluffier pillow, she didn’t love the feel of this one, which she didn’t find to be as “huggable” as some of the others she has tried. However, she observed that the pillow essentially stays “locked into place wherever you set it down,” so it could be a great option if you are looking for firm pressure relief that won’t give too much under the weight of your limbs, or as back support if you are pregnant or trying totrain yourself to sleep on your side.

It’s a bit smaller than a standard body pillow, at 48 inches long and about 14 inches wide. Its size is a potential bonus if you’re petite or want a body pillow that won’t take up too much space in your bed, and a potential drawback if you’re tall or plan to buy an additional pillow case to go over the machine-washable cover, as most standard-size body-pillow cases will be too large and loose.

This Cozy Earth body pillow is supremely plush. It’s filled with a down-alternative — a blend of polyester and bamboo viscose — that really succeeds in capturing the cushy, marshmallow-y feeling of down. It’s simultaneously soft and doughy, but also fluffy. And it springs back when you push into it, rather than staying compressed. The pillow is pretty densely-stuffed with filling, but it doesn’t feel overfilled. I tested this pillow out around the same time as a similar body pillow fromBuffy, and when testing the two back to back, the Cozy Earth’s ultra-cushioning fill really stood out to me. (While the Buffy pillow was perfectly fine, the fill felt like run-of-the-mill polyfill to me compared to the Cozy Earth’s.) And even though it is so soft, I still felt some support from the Cozy Earth pillow. Rather than sinking into the fill or flattening it under my weight, the Cozy Earth pillow seemed to conform around me — almost like memory-foam would.

The pillow has a bamboo viscose cover, in addition to including bamboo viscose in the fill. The cover is smooth, soft, and ever-so-slightly cool to the touch. But if you want to add a pillowcase, Cozy Earth sells bamboo viscose ones in a variety of colors. They sent me the Oat colorway to try, and it almost feels like silk. But if you don’t want to go with Cozy Earth’s pillowcase, which costs $60, the pillow would easily fit into standard case sizes from other brands. The only real complaint I have about this pillow is that it is pretty expensive at full price. One good thing about Cozy Earth, however, is that they run frequent sales, so you can often get it for less.

This lightweight down-alternative body pillow fromParachuteoffers plush, medium-soft support. Strategist senior editor Winnie Yang bought it to use during her third pregnancy and prefers it over firmer body pillows, describing it as “lofty, airy, and cooling when I feel overly warm; warm and comforting when I feel a little cold; and easy to maneuver into place.” The pillow doesn’t come with a removable pillowcase, but its measurements are standard, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find one — or, for an extra $129, you can purchase alinen pillowcase(available in five colors) from Parachute that Yang says gives the pillow a nice aesthetic (as long as you’re willing to pay more than the cost of the actual pillow to get it). Parachute also sellsboucleandstitched cottonbody-pillow covers. The pillow itself has a 100 percent cotton-sateen shell, and the entire pillow is machine washable. It’s also notably less expensive than the Cozy Earth body pillow above. They’re the same size and shape, so the biggest difference between the two is ultimately the materials — Cozy Earth’s bamboo viscose cover and bamboo-polyester blend fill versus Parachute’s cotton cover and microfiber fill. Neither of these is necessarily better, but I would go for Cozy Earth if you want a little more temperature regulation from the bamboo.

This hefty down-alternative body pillow from Pluto (which also makes a greatcustom pillow) is densely stuffed with ultrafine poly-fill. The pillow weighs approximately 12 pounds — a bit heavier than the much firmer Tempur-Pedic, and a surprising feat considering that down-alternatives are a lot airier and more lightweight compared to memory foam and latex. Senior editor Jen Trolio tested this pillow and reports that a major benefit of its weight is that it stays put as you cuddle up next to it (however, for this same reason, it can be difficult to move once it’s under a blanket). Trolio prefers squishy, plush pillows over firmer, denser ones as a rule, and reports that the PUFF works really well for her, providing a good mix of softness and support. Because it is so thoroughly stuffed, it’s on the firmer side for a “plush” pillow, while still feeling softer than most, and doesn’t flatten out, though you may occasionally need to bat it around a bit to redistribute the fill.

The Pluto PUFF comes with a quilted, cool-to-the-touch polyethylene-and-cotton-blend cover, which is removable if you prefer to sleep on the non-quilted 100-percent-cotton shell of the pillow itself. Both the removable cover and the entire pillow are machine washable. Pluto also sellsnicer-looking coversthat the brand cheekily calls “I-can’t-believe-it’s-not-silk pillowcases” for an additional $50; they are made of cooling eucalyptus lyocell and have a smooth and frictionless “slip” to them (since Trolio is not asilk-pillowcaseaficionado, she didn’t comment on how the fabric directly compares to real silk). The covers are available in four colors: créme, fern, fog, and celeste (a light-blue shade).

Sleep Crown first caught our attention when multiplecelebritiestoldusthey were fans of the brand’sover-the-head pillow. After Trolio tried (and loved) it, she called in the brand’s other products to test, including this mini body pillow. All of Sleep Crown’s pillows are made with the same delightfully squishy poly-fill. Though it is technically a down-alternative pillow like the Cozy Earth, Parachute,and Pluto body pillows above, Trolio says the Sleep Crown body pillow feels less fluffy and airy and more like a mega (and much more expensive) version of the Squishmallows her daughters keep on their beds. The fill is compressive yet responsive — it immediately pops back into place after pressure is released — and has similarities in feel to both memory-foam (in the way it cradles and contours) and latex (in the way it springs back to shape), even though it doesn’t contain either of those materials. The pillow is heavy for its fill type (Trolio’s weighs about six pounds), but she says it feels more floppy than dense. “It will kind of fold in half over your arm like a napkin on a cartoon butler,” she says.

Notably, the Sleep Crown body pillow is considerably shorter than most other body pillows, which might be nice for shorter folks or people who don’t want to sacrifice too much bed space. It has the same dimensions as a standard king-size pillow, and thus Trolio was able to fit hers into a king pillowcase, which opens up a lot more cover options. The major drawback of this pillow is its staggering price tag, an eye-popping $358. But if you have the money to spend and you like the sound of a down-alternative pillow with a supremely unique and squishy feel, it’s a worthwhile splurge.

A C-shaped pillow like this one from Bedgear offers a more cocooning experience than a standard straight body pillow. Bedgear calls this pillow U-shaped, but I’d say it falls more in the C-category, since it isn’t “double-sided” like the pregnancy pillows below. You may need to move the pillow to the other side of your body if you change sleeping positions, but it won’t take up as much bed space as a typical U-shaped body pillow. It’s filled with a mix of shredded foam and polyester fill, which gives it a supportive but fairly squishy feel. I found it super cozy to snuggle into; I could rest my head on the top end of the C-shape while hugging the middle and wrapping my legs around the bottom. I also liked that I could place the pillow behind my back and sit against the inner curve to prop myself up while reading in my bed. This pillow has a two-sided cover; one side is covered in a soft knit gray fabric, and the other in a more slick cooling one. I like the idea of switching between the two sides, but I could always feel the cooling side when hugging the pillow, regardless of whether it was facing up or down. This bugged me a little because I run cold, but could obviously be a nice feature for sleepers who run warm. It’s worth noting, too, that the knit side is gray and the cooling side is white, and because this pillow’s shape is unique compared to other C-shaped pillows, it may be difficult to find a more attractive case.

The Buffy Wiggle is much narrower and longer than any of the body pillows discussed above. At 82 inches long and eight inches wide, the pillow is essentially an extra-long, flexible bolster pillow — and it is tied with the Bearaby Cuddler, below, for the title of the longest body pillow on this list. The Wiggle is filled with recycled PET (the same type of plastic used to make disposable water bottles) that’s been spun into fluffy fiber. The fill itself is fairly soft and fluffy, but is densely stuffed into the pillow, giving it a more medium firmness. Still, it’s bendy enough to twist and shape as you like, which is definitely part of this pillow’s appeal. As someone who is only five-foot-five, I don’t have much need of an extremely lengthy body pillow, but I did like that I could curve the Wiggle into a U-shaped or C-shaped pillow to use it in different ways. When sleeping with it completely straight, lying on my side, I found the extra length a little unwieldy, so I ended up curving one end into more of anL-shapeto reduce the extra length and create a nook where I could rest my head. I also appreciated the smaller circumference of the pillow, as I sometimes find larger body pillows too wide to hug for extended periods of time. And after sleeping with it, I ended up putting the Wiggle onto my old, saggy couch to use as an additional lumbar support — I think you could use it similarly when reading in bed or for other lounge-y activities.

The Wiggle’s lyocell cover is white, but you can buy a variety of different covers from Buffy for a more specific look. The covers are pretty spendy — an extra $95-$105 on top of the price of the pillow — but Buffy has some really great options, made from either a fluffy fleece or linen hemp. The standard fleece and linen hemp come in a few different neutral and earth-tone colors; they also have some floral linen hemp covers with velvet piping that are very pretty. I have a cream, fluffy fleece cover that makes the pillow look and feel extra cozy.

From the brand that makes one of our favoriteweighted blankets, Bearaby’s Cuddler body pillow is made of springy, supportive natural latex (it’s the brand’s proprietarylatex foam, which it calls Melofoam). The shape is essentially the same as the Wiggle pillow above — they are almost the exact same size — so the key difference between them is the fill types.Former Strategist writer Latifah Miles, who is five-foot-ten, tested the Cuddler and “instantly fell in love with the extra length.” The pillow was easy to configure into different shapes, and the natural rubber fill is hyperresponsive, so instead of sinking into the pillow, Miles felt propped up in just about every position she tried.

The pillow comes with a machine-washable organic-cotton cover — or, for an additional $129, you can purchase anorganic-cotton knitted coverthat comes in two colors (Midnight Blue and Asteroid Gray). When the Cuddler is unfurled to its full length as a bolster pillow, it spans the width of a king-size bed, and if you splash out for the fancier cover, it can also add some attractive texture to your bedscape. However, you can also tie the pillow into a chunky knot when you aren’t using it, for a more compact yet sculptural throw-pillow look.

It’s both malleable and supportive, with a feel that is similar to the brand’s popularbeanbag chairs. Trolio has tested many of Yogibo’s products and says “they almost make you feel like you are weightlessly suspended.” However, she has found that she is sensitive to the sound of the EPS bead fill, which can be particularly disruptive in a pillow, so she appreciates that the brand’s Midi Caterpillar body pillow contains a mix of 80 percent EPS beads and 20 percent polyester fiber, with the fiber helping to lessen the noise. Overall, the pillow will adapt to your body the way memory foam does, without trapping body heat; the caveat is that it needs to be fluffed quite often, and you will likely need to add more filling over time because the EPS beads will ultimately compress with use. The Midi Caterpillar is another one of the shorter pillows on this list, so it won’t take up too much space in your bed and can be especially useful for petite people. (It also comes in acurved shape, if you’re looking for more of a C-shaped pillow.) The machine-washable cover is made of a lightweight spandex-and-cotton blend that stays cool and comes in eight colors (blue, dark gray, turquoise, purple, pink, light gray, brown, and fern).
